Text 13 May Steam for Mac on an external drive

Just installed Steam for Mac. Had to do a bit of messing around to get it to use my external drive as a data store… here’s the steps I took:

  1. Moved the library steam created from ~/Library/Application Support/Steam to /Volumes/external/Games/Steam Library.
  2. Moved the Steam Content folder from ~/Documents/Steam Content/ to /Volumes/external/Games/Steam Content
  3. Open Terminal.app and type “ln -s /Volumes/external/Games/Steam\ Library /Users/username/Library/Application\ Support/Steam” (replace username with your mac username and external  with the name of your external drive, remembering to add a \ before any spaces)
  4. Type “ln -s /Volumes/external/Games/Steam\ Content /Users/username/Documents/Steam\ Content” with the same replacements as above.

Now I can install games that were too big for my meagre 100gig internal drive. I’ll post again once I find out how Portal performs on my aging macbook pro. Thanks to LightBrigade on the Steam forums. edit: Portal runs like crap on my 2006 MBP. Oh well :)
